Volunteers and organizations in Montenegro in need of help

You can help stray animals in many different ways.

If interacting with wounded dogs or abandoned kittens directly is emotionally difficult for you, you still can help by providing financial and/or informational support to animal welfare volunteers. The most prominent ones are in this list.

Very often, volunteers are looking for a car to transport a cat or a dog to the clinic, some rare medication, a foster family, or pet goods (carriers, litter boxes, pet food, old towels, and linen). Items you do not need anymore can be very useful for a street fluffy.

List of volunteers in Montenegro
  • Zhanna Kaganovskaya

Zhanna is a founder of the private shelter "Faithful Heart" in Danilovgrad. Thanks to her, hundreds of sick animals were taken from the streets, cured, and then handed over to new loving owners.
Besides, she helps volunteers across the country providing advice, goods, and medications for free. She also administrates the "Living Montenegro" Facebook community.

    - You can donate to Zhanna's shelter here: https://spasi-me.com/donate/

  • Alisa Popovic

Alisa Popovic is the eldest volunteer in Budva who helped hundreds of cats along the coast! Most of the sterilized cats in Becici, Rafailovici, and Kamenovo are the result of her work. Alisa feeds the animals every day - early in the morning and late in the evening, before and after she goes to her day job. Since Alisa is looking after cats on quite a vast territory, she is a regular visitor of local vet clinics - she brings animals whom she found in critical health conditions after an encounter with a dog or a car accident, ensures they are operated on, and takes care of them after the treatment.

She has eight cats of her own (!), two of which are suffering from Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Also, more than ten cats at her place are looking to be adopted.

  • Irina Bogomolova

Irina Bogomolova does the impossible all by herself, that's something we can officially declare. At the time of writing this article, she has 13 animals under her care, all of whom had incredibly harsh early days. Irina found them on the street severely injured, weak from infections, with sick eyes, or completely blind.

Now it's hard to believe that the animals from the shocking pictures and the beauties worthy of a glossy magazine are the same, but they are.

Petite Irina takes care of an unbelievable number of stray and rescued animals, which is too heavy weight for shoulders of one person. She rarely asks for help, and continues to change the lives of poor souls to the better again and again.

    She always needs help with:
    - pet food,
    - medications,
    - financial assistance (for vaccination, spaying, surgery and treatment of complex infections).

    Details for donation:
    - CKB banka: 4174 6550 1197 3818 (Irina Bogomolova)
    - SBER card: 2202 2036 0205 4951 (Ирина Богомолова)

If you can help Irina in any way, please contact her in telegram or facebook.

  • Svetlana Shabalina.

Svetlana and her husband have been helping homeless animals in Russia for 14 years. After moving to Montenegro, their “scale” increased, because the situation with stray animals here is totally critical.

While having 6 pets at home already, Svetlana does not pass by animals in trouble on the street. Over six months she and her husband have rescued two dogs (that were later sent to adopting parents in Riga and Spain), more than 7 kittens with various health problems, including complex bone fractures, a dog with a broken leg, an abandoned dog with 5 newborn puppies... And this is not to mention spaying and neutering of street cats and feeding a huge number of stray animals.

You can donate money, food, or medicine by contacting her directly via telegram.

  • Irina Koroleva and Irina Efremova.

The two Iras, Efremova and Koroleva, joined forces in Herceg Novi to help cats. In just three years (2023-2025), this joint venture has achieved impressive results; just look:

    • Spayed - 95 animals.
    • Treated/operated on - 50.
    • Found a home - 38 cats/kittens, and right now, as you're reading this post, they are warming their bellies on cozy couches all around the world, from Chicago to Paris, from Amsterdam to Podgorica.

The girls take the selection of future owners for their charges extremely seriously, and at the moment they have as many as 9 kittens for adoption between them. This number rarely changes, because the global cat distribution system keeps throwing new poor souls their way 😐 But they don't give up and keep going.
